` Jeff and Vera's story is a main plotline of The Russians are Coming!, an imaginative and spirited narrative embracing both diversity and universality. Set in small-town America, the novel's main characters, six Russian newcomers and the Americans they meet, provide a fresh perspective on a close-knit college community.

` Jeff and Vera face the greatest obstacles of the group in their struggle for love. Vera's marriage is unhappy, yet the two use their meetings, those that are coincidence and those contrived, merely to talk. It is only in Jeff's vivid dreams, at first, that the two come together as lovers. Those dreams, too, embellish a core reality of American racism, complete with burning cross and lynch mob.

` The talks are long, private and flirtatious, showing not only the differences between the Russian woman and the African-American man but the more profound similarities. And the two become closer as their result. Yet both remain hesitant. Convention restrains them.

` The couple's hesitation regarding the "conventions of society" is not merely part of their own deeply ingrained complexes, but that is the most of it.

` Torment and self-recrimination give way - and the struggle for love has not been in vain.

` Narrowed to a specific 14-month time frame, but enhanced with flashbacks and epilogue, the novel touches modern-day Russia, an America still reminding itself of the Cold War and shaking its racist history, and academic life in both countries. It explores love, loss, passion, bigotry, lies and truth.

` The novel is, as well, a great coming-together of the diverse. Much in the world is black and white, but humans are more alike than they often realize. As Vera says, when she notices similarities between her friend, Vlad, and her lover, Jeff, "Yes, it is true; all people are brothers."
